Is drinking Alcohol Beneficial to Your Lifestyle—Sober Curious

You may not have noticed yet, but there’s been a shift—fewer people are turning to alcohol as a means of escape.

The sober curious movement is gaining momentum, becoming a powerful cultural shift.

More people are realizing that drinking or regularly using substances often creates more distress than relief in their lives.

My personal experience with partying took a toll on my mental health and my life in my mid-thirties. Still, because I had old belief patterns around alcohol, it seemed perfectly normal to drink regularly.

It wasn’t until I began to reflect on my lifestyle and understand that I was stuck in a vicious cycle that was becoming detrimental to my health, which fueled my desire to become fully sober for 3.5 months.

The experience completely changed my perception around drinking alcohol, and led me to a more holistic and balanced lifestyle.

Sober curious lifestyle

The sober curious lifestyle is being accountable and intentional when it comes to your drinking habits, as well as changing your relationship with alcohol, but not abstaining entirely from the drug.

Ruby Warrington, author of Sober Curious, mentions in her book how different your life would be if you stopped drinking on auto-pilot or altogether.

The movement is to help individuals reflect on the role alcohol plays in their lives and whether it is really that beneficial.

According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, sober curious aims to:

  • Addressing drinking culture and norms.

  • Enhancing an individual's health and well-being.

  • Assisting individuals in developing sustainable, safer alcohol habits.

The idea is to create healthier and more mindful long-term drinking habits, including drinking less, less heavily, or not at all. It depends on the individual and their goals.

What Does Sober Curious Mean?

According to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, the sober curious movement aims to:
Challenge societal drinking norms and reduce the pressure to drink in social settings.
Prioritize health and well-being by recognizing the impact alcohol has on physical and mental health.
Encourage mindful habits, helping individuals develop a healthier relationship with alcohol—whether that means drinking less, drinking more intentionally, or choosing not to drink at all.

Sober curious is a movement for individuals who are stuck in a drinking pattern and want to break free of the cycle, this movement is not for people who suffer from Alcohol use disorder—please seek professional help.
